People lose all their Toyota keys more often than you would guess. The most common story is simple. They bought the car used with one key, always meant to get a spare, and years later that one key finally breaks. The shell cracks, the blade snaps in the door, or the fob goes through the wash.
A woman at her apartment in Poway had her only key to her 2012 Toyota Prius crack at the housing and the blade snapped clean off in the door lock. Half stuck in the lock, the fob housing in her other hand. Zero working keys and a car she could not open.
I used my VVDI2 to read the transponder data from the broken key's chip, which was still intact inside the cracked housing. The VVDI2 reads the chip code even from a damaged key, saving time because I did not need a full all-keys-lost immobilizer reset. I extracted the blade fragment, decoded the lock, and cut two fresh keys. Her fob, FCC ID HYQ14ACX, was a 4-button key that I rebuilt into a new shell with the salvaged chip and circuit board.
She went from zero keys to two in about 40 minutes. Total was $217. A full AKL without the broken pieces would cost more, and the dealer wanted $392 regardless. If you still have the broken key, bring it. The chip inside a cracked fob is usually fine and makes the job faster and cheaper.
