A guy in Rancho Santa Fe had just bought a used 2009 Toyota Prius off Craigslist. Good car, fair price, one key. The seller handed him a single blade key with a worn rubber button pad and told him to get a spare on his own. He figured maybe $50 at the hardware store.
Hardware stores cannot program Toyota transponder keys. The chip inside talks to the car's immobilizer and without that handshake the engine will not start. He called the dealer and they wanted $449 for a spare. He called me and asked if that was normal. It is normal for a dealer. It is not normal for a locksmith. I charge $256.
I met him at the meetup spot and used my VVDI2 to clone his existing key's chip data onto a fresh blank. The VVDI2 reads the transponder code from the original and writes it to a new chip so the immobilizer accepts it without a full reset. His remote, FCC ID MOZB31EG, was a 3-button fob on an older Toyota platform. I cut the TOY43 blade on my machine and paired the remote through OBD.
He drove away with two working keys for less than the dealer wanted for one. That spare also means if he ever loses one, the next replacement is an add-a-key job instead of all-keys-lost, which saves him hundreds.
