A guy out near Fairbanks Ranch in Rancho Santa Fe called me about his 2009 Prius. His fob had stopped being recognized about half the time, then fully stopped one morning in his driveway.
He had already read enough forums to know he needed a new fob, and he had already called the dealer. The dealer told him to bring it in, said they would order the fob and have him back in a few days. He did not love that answer.
He met me at his property. I asked him the usual questions before I touched anything. Did the dash show a warning when the fob stopped working. Was the emergency blade still getting him in the door. Had anyone else tried programming a fob before this call. All no, no, and no.
I opened the existing fob first. The CR2032 inside was not dead, but it was reading low enough to explain the intermittent behavior. I swapped it, tested range, tested the push-button start. Still not pairing right. That told me the original fob was likely damaged or we had a registration issue.
I pulled out the diagnostic equipment, connected through the OBD port under the dash, and ran the key registration routine. The system had the original fob registered and nothing else. I added the new fob I had with me, verified it against the immobilizer, walked all the door handles, tested push-button start, tested the lock and unlock. Clean.
The whole job happened in his driveway. He was back inside before his lunch was cold. The dealer comparison came up only when he mentioned what they had quoted him and how long they said it would take. I just nodded. He saved a good chunk and did not wait days for an appointment.
