I was already done for the night when the call came in. A woman in the Richland neighborhood of San Marcos, parked outside after a long hospital run with her kid. The Prius fob was completely dead. She tried holding it to the start button the way the manual says. Nothing. The car just sat there.
She found me, called, and I told her I was on my way.
When I got there, the first thing I did was get the door open using the mechanical blade tucked inside the fob, which a lot of people forget is there until they need it. From there I got into the car and started looking at what we were dealing with.
The original fob battery hadn't just died, it had leaked. There was corrosion on the internal contact plate, which explained why even the close-range backup read wasn't working. The antenna inside the start button is short range by design, but it still needs the fob's circuit to be functional. Hers wasn't. The fob was done.
I replaced it with a verified compatible unit, ran the programming sequence through the diagnostic port, and confirmed the immobilizer accepted the new fob. Then I walked every button, tested the door handle touch sensors front and rear, and ran the start cycle twice before I called it good.
She had the car running inside 45 minutes of my arrival. The dealer was closed anyway, and even if it hadn't been, she would have been looking at a morning appointment at minimum plus a tow if she couldn't get the car running herself.
Her kid fell asleep in the back before I finished packing up my bag. That's the job.
