A tire shop in Downtown Santee called me on a Wednesday afternoon. Not the Prius owner directly. The shop.
They had a 2019 Prius sitting in their bay and a story to go with it. The owner had needed a replacement smart key. Another locksmith came out, attempted programming through the OBD port, got errors partway through, and left. Now the vehicle security system was sitting in a fault state. No fob would start the car. The previous attempt had not completed the registration process cleanly, and the system had locked itself out of normal OBD-level key programming.
The tire shop had no idea what to do with a Prius that would not start and a key system that had already rejected one technician. They found me.
I pulled up with my bench-level module tool. When OBD communication is blocked by a prior failed programming attempt, you go around it. That means pulling the relevant control module, reading the security data directly from the chip, clearing the fault state, and rebuilding the key registration from the ground up. It takes longer. It requires a different category of equipment. But it works when nothing else will.
The reset took time. There is a built-in delay in the relearn process on these systems and you cannot rush it. While I waited, the tire shop guys asked me about the tool. They had never seen that approach before.
First clean attempt after the reset, the new smart fob registered. I ran the full check: proximity detection at each door handle, the start button, lock and unlock, the whole sequence. Everything worked.
About 90 minutes total. The owner picked the car up that evening. His alternative had been a flatbed ride to the dealer, a multi-day wait, and a bill that would have made the tire shop visit look cheap by comparison. I carry the bench tools for exactly this situation.
