2015 Acura RLX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is the dealer part number the smart key fob, or something else?

That part number is the emergency insert blade only. It is the small metal key that lives inside the smart fob and handles physical lock cylinders when the electronic system is unavailable. It is not the remote, not the transponder, not the proximity fob. The actual smart fobs are separate assemblies with their own dealer part numbers, and there are two versions tied to the Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory slots.

Q: Can I program a replacement smart key for a 2015 RLX myself?

No. There is no ignition-cycle trick or button sequence on this car. New fobs are registered through the vehicle's keyless access system using a scan tool at the OBD port. Acura's registration process follows a specific sequence through the start system menu, and an all-keys-lost situation can add additional steps on top of that. Buying a fob online is fine if you want to source the part yourself. But pairing it to the car is still a professional tool job.

Q: My 2015 RLX says something about the keyless access system on the dash but the car still starts. What is actually going on?

A keyless access warning on the dash with a car that still starts usually means the system detected something off with the fob signal or the registration, but the immobilizer side of the handshake came through well enough to allow the start. The two functions are related but they do not always fail together. Common causes: a weak or failing fob battery, a fob that got wet internally, or a registration that partially degraded over time.

Q: The RLX has two key fobs, one for each driver. Do both need to be programmed at the same time?

No, but there is a catch worth knowing. The system supports separate memory slots for each registered fob. When the car reads which fob is present, it can load the seat position, mirror angles, and other driver preferences tied to that slot. If you are only replacing one fob, the other stays registered and untouched in most cases. All-keys-lost is the exception: when every fob is gone and the system is reset from scratch, everything gets re-registered together.

2015 Acura RLX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

In Ventura, up in the Hillsides, an RLX owner met me in a school parking lot during her planning period. One smart fob between her and her day. She could not afford downtime.

The fob was in rough shape. The case had split at the seam, the buttons had gone soft and mushy, and the car had started getting inconsistent about proximity. Some mornings it would catch her approach and unlock without a second thought. Other mornings she was digging out the emergency insert blade like it was a house key.

I pulled out the fob, checked the battery contact, and plugged into the OBD port. Added a fresh remote, erased the damaged fob from the system so it could not be used if it walked off somewhere. Standard process, clean result.

Then the part nobody skips: lock, unlock, handle touch unlock from both doors, handle lock button, every other button on the fob, and a few start cycles with the fob sitting in a jacket pocket and flat on the passenger seat. The RLX ties driver preferences to each registered fob, so when the seat memory came back on the first pull, she noticed. That detail matters on a car like this.

She was back inside before the bell. Dealer was never really in the conversation.

Acura RLX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2015 Acura RLX smart key replacement take on site?▼

If there is at least one working fob already registered, adding a spare is a short appointment. The registration process goes through the OBD port and moves quickly once the right remote is in hand. All-keys-lost is longer. The system runs a full re-registration sequence, and depending on where things are in the process, it may prompt for additional verification steps. That adds time, not because the tools are slow, but because the security sequence has its own pace.
