Out at Faria Beach in Ventura, I got a call with that tight, measured voice that tells you the situation was already bad before the phone came out.
She had been unloading bags from the RLX while her kids were buckled in the back. When she turned around, her purse was gone. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it. A stranger nearby handed her their phone to use.
