Quite a bit more, and the reason is the process, not the parts.

When you have one working key, adding a spare is a relatively contained job. The system already has a registered key in memory, the car communicates normally, and I add the new fob through the diagnostic port. Clean and fast.

All-keys-lost is a different animal. The security system has no reference point, so I have to access and read the immobilizer data, generate working keys from that data, and register at minimum two fobs before the car will acknowledge any of them and allow a start. That whole sequence takes meaningfully longer and involves more steps, which is reflected in the cost.

The honest advice: if you have one key right now, get the spare made while the job is still the simpler version.

Are aftermarket Audi Q5 fobs cheaper and do they actually work?

Sometimes, but it is a gamble on a 2014 Q5.

Older, simpler Audis are more forgiving about aftermarket fobs - buy one online, have a locksmith program it, done. The 2014 Q5 is not that era. The security system on this generation is more particular about key compatibility, and forum threads from Q5 owners are full of stories about fobs that sort-of work: they start the car but the proximity touch unlock never fully behaves, or one function is flaky from day one.

The part number on the fob matters. I carry fobs that are verified compatible with this specific vehicle so you are not finding out at midnight in a parking lot that the cheap one you ordered does not fully integrate.

My 2014 Q5 key fob still has a new battery but range is terrible and touch unlock is inconsistent. What is going on?

This comes up on Q5 forums more than you would expect, and the battery is usually still the starting point even when it is "new."

First thing I check is whether the replacement battery was seated correctly and whether the contacts inside the fob are clean and making solid contact. A slightly bent or dirty contact reads as low voltage to the system even with a fresh CR2032. Pop the fob open, clean the contact points, reseat the battery deliberately.

If that does not change anything, the fob itself may need attention. The touch unlock sensors in the door handles are a separate circuit from the start function, so if the car starts fine but handle unlock is inconsistent, that points toward either the fob signal degrading or a handle sensor issue on that specific door. If it is both handles, I lean toward the fob. If it is one door only, I start looking at the door side. Either way, it is worth a call before you assume you need a full replacement.

Can I use a spare Q5 fob I bought online if I have it programmed by a locksmith?

Depends on what you bought.

The fob needs to match the factory specification for your specific Q5. The number of buttons matters, the internal hardware matters, and the fob has to be compatible with the year and trim of your vehicle. A fob listed as "fits Q5" on a marketplace site is not always accurate.

The wrong fob, no matter how well it gets programmed, will not.
