She was in Old Town Camarillo, at one of the outdoor shops along the main strip, pushing her infant in a stroller. Her bag was hanging off the handle. Someone took it. Keys, wallet, phone, all of it.
She borrowed a phone from a store employee and called her husband first. Then the police. Then me.
Her 2015 Q5 was sitting in the garage at home. Zero keys in the family's possession. Her husband had already called the Audi dealer. They said they could order the parts but the car would need to be towed in. The wait was three to five business days. And because a key had been stolen, they were recommending a full immobilizer reset so the stolen fob couldn't be used to start or enter the car. The combined estimate was steep, and they'd need the car on their lot to do any of it.
All-keys-lost is a different job than adding a spare. When a working key is already in the picture, the car trusts it, and registering a new one is relatively quick. AKL means I wipe the entire key memory first. The stolen fob, once that's done, is dead to this car. It won't unlock the doors, it won't communicate with the immobilizer, it won't do anything. I used my diagnostic equipment to access the immobilizer, clear the old key data, and program two new smart keys against her VIN from scratch. I also decoded the lock cylinder and cut the emergency blade for each fob so she'd have a mechanical backup if the battery ever died at a bad moment.
I was done before the police finished taking her statement in the parking area nearby.
She drove home that night with her baby in the back seat. Two fully programmed, tested fobs. The dealer's tow-plus-wait route wasn't something she had to touch.
