A guy at the watch repair shop over in Midtown neighborhood in Ventura flagged me down about his 2017 X4. Another locksmith had cut and programmed a key three days earlier. Worked fine at first. Then it stopped.
His X4 would crank strong but kill fuel immediately. Every time. The other locksmith told him the DME was bad and that he needed the dealer. That sounded wrong to me.
The DME was fine. What happened was the locksmith programmed the key to the CAS4+ but never completed the ISN synchronization between the CAS4+ and the DME. BMW's immobilizer uses a shared secret number between those two modules. If that handshake is incomplete, the system gives you a short grace period, sometimes a few drive cycles, then locks you out hard. It is the single most common reason a BMW key "stops working" after a few days.
I pulled CAS4+ data with my VVDI2, confirmed the ISN mismatch, and reprogrammed his 4-button smart key (YGOHUF5767, the comfort-access fob with the chrome side buttons) with a correct sync. Clean start. No fuel cutoff. No hesitation on the dash.
He had the emergency blade insert too, the uncut HU100R profile that BMW tucks inside the fob body. I verified it turned the driver door cylinder since half these owners have never even pulled it out.
His cost was a fraction of what the dealer quoted. The difference between a BMW key that lasts and one that dies after three days is that ISN sync, and I verify it on every single job.
