Got a call from a guy stuck in the airport parking structure over on the Westside neighborhood side of Ventura. His flight landed Wednesday evening, he took the shuttle to short-term, and his 2018 BMW X4 was just sitting there ignoring him. Pressed every button on the fob. Nothing. Held it against the steering column where the backup reader sits. Nothing. Doors locked, car dark.
He already called the dealer. Earliest appointment was Friday. A tow out of that garage was going to cost him on top of it.
I got to the structure in about 40 minutes. Gained entry, plugged my IM608 II into the OBD port, and pulled the CAS3+ data. His key profile was still registered, ISN still matched the DME. The problem was simpler than he expected: the CR2032 inside his N5F-ID21A fob had gone completely flat. No battery power means the Hitag2 transponder chip can't respond to the CAS antenna, so the car acts like the key doesn't exist.
Replaced the cell, resynced the fob to the CAS3+ module, then tested every function. Remote lock, unlock, trunk release, panic. Comfort access on both front door handles. Push-button start with the fob in his pocket, then again with it sitting in the center console backup slot.
He drove home that same night. His X4 never left the parking space he pulled into a week earlier.
