A retired engineer in the Downtown Ojai area called me about a spare key for his 2020 X4. He'd been putting it off for two years. Nearest BMW dealer was a 30-minute freeway drive, and he just didn't want to deal with it. Said it out loud like he was confessing something.

The N5F-ID21A smart key pairs through an OBD session with the FEM, but for all the work including proximity, start, and comfort access, the module needs to accept the new key's transponder ID and sync the remote functions together.
Cut the emergency HU100R insert blade on site, programmed the fob, then tested every function: comfort access on both front handles, trunk button, remote start sequence, push-button ignition. Walked the car twice to check proximity range at each door.
He stood in the garage doorway watching the whole thing. When I handed him both keys, he just said he wished he'd called two years ago instead of letting it sit.
