2012 Honda CR-Z Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Hillsides, Ventura, a CR-Z owner called me from a pharmacy parking lot. He was diabetic, his insulin was at home, and the car wasn't going anywhere. The remote head key had gone completely dark. No lock, no unlock, nothing. He'd tried the dealer already. Next available appointment was the following day.
He called me instead. I was about fifteen minutes out.
When I got there, the car was sitting in a corner spot. He was calm but you could tell he was running the clock in his head. I asked him a couple quick questions. Turned out the car had needed a jump start a few days earlier.
That detail mattered. A full battery drain on these Hondas can knock the remote programming out of the body control module even when the transponder side of the key still functions. He hadn't lost the ability to start the car, just the remote functions. But without being able to confirm that, I treated it as both.
I popped the key open first. The CR1616 inside was showing low voltage. Swapped it, reseated it correctly, and tested. Remote still wasn't responding. So I plugged into the OBD port, ran the relearn sequence through the immobilizer, and registered the key back to the vehicle. Tested lock, unlock, and the third button. All working. Engine started clean.
Then I walked him through the mechanical override so he'd know what to do if the fob ever died on him in a parking lot again. That part took maybe three minutes and he actually wrote it down.
From his phone call to the engine running was right around forty minutes. The dealer had quoted him a next-day appointment and a number that made him wince. He made it to the pharmacy. Sometimes this job is just getting someone where they need to go before it turns into something worse.
