2012 Honda CR-Z Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura, a guy with a 2012 CR-Z called me from a pharmacy parking lot. His key had quit on him completely. No remote response, no start. He was diabetic, needed to get home for his insulin, and couldn't wait around.
He had already called the dealer. Earliest opening was the next day. That's not a scheduling problem. That's a health problem.
I was about 15 minutes out. When I got there, I opened the car and plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. His remote head key, the MLBHLIK-1T with the Honda part number 35111-SWA-306, had a completely dead CR1616. That explained the remote failure. But the no-start was a separate issue. He had jump-started the car earlier that week, and the immobilizer had lost transponder sync. The HITAG 2 chip was fine, just needed to be re-registered to the body control module.
Swapped the CR1616, ran the transponder relearn through OBD, then tested lock, unlock, trunk, and engine start. All back. I walked him through the emergency blade start procedure too, just so he'd know the car can still turn over even if a battery dies on the fob again.
Phone call to engine running, about 40 minutes. He drove straight to his prescription and headed home. The dealer would have had him waiting until tomorrow for a fraction of the work I did on the spot.
