Out in Mussel Shoals, right along that narrow strip of Ventura coastline, I got a call from a guy who had been living out of his CR-Z for the better part of a week while apartment hunting. The fob had been acting up for a few days before it finally stopped talking to the car entirely. He could still get in with the mechanical insert key tucked inside the fob, but the push-button start would not recognize the fob at all.
He had already swapped the CR2032 himself, which was the right first move. Fresh battery, correct size, seated properly. The car still sat there giving him a key-not-detected warning every time. So the battery was not the problem.
When I got there, he had his whole life in the back seat and a coffee going on the roof. I ran diagnostics through the OBD port and confirmed the existing fob had dropped out of the system entirely. Not repairable, just gone. We needed a new fob programmed in from scratch.
Cut the blade to his vehicle, ran the Honda programming sequence, registered the new fob through the security handshake, and tested every button before I touched anything else. Lock, unlock, push-button start confirmed, all four buttons working. I walked the car once, checked that the door handle passive detection was responding, and that was it.
He asked me what the dealer would have taken. I told him a few days minimum, probably a tow since the car wasn't drivable for him the way he wanted it. He just nodded and went back to his coffee. Same-day, on-site, fraction of what the dealer route would have cost him.
