2013 Honda CR-Z Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Juanamaria, I got a call mid-morning from a guy running a food truck. He had opened his 2013 CR-Z to grab something before his shift and the key snapped right at the shoulder, where the blade meets the plastic head. Half the blade stayed in the ignition. The other half was in his hand. He was calm enough on the phone but I could tell he was doing the math on how bad this morning was about to get.
When I arrived, I could see the broken section was seated deep in the cylinder. The car had actually shut off clean, which was lucky. I extracted the broken blade without disturbing the wafers inside the cylinder, then decoded the lock from the cylinder itself.
The CR-Z uses a remote head key, so the fob portion was attached to the broken piece he was holding. The remote side was intact and the factory fob was fine. What I needed to do was cut a new key blade to match the decoded readings and then get the transponder in the new key head registered to the vehicle. One programming cycle later, the green key light came on solid, the engine started, and the remote locked and unlocked without a hitch.
He was back on the lot in under an hour from my arrival. A dealer would have been a tow, a multi-day appointment, and a wait for parts. For him, the morning recovered.
