2018 Honda HR-V Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A photographer had a 2018 HR-V EX sitting at a canyon overlook lot outside Montecito, near San Ysidro Ranch. Zero keys. He had hiked back to the main road just to get a cell signal because there was nothing out there.

He had already called around and been told smart key all-keys-lost was a dealer-only job. That would have meant a flatbed tow back to the nearest Honda store, plus their wait time, plus their pricing. Not a great afternoon.

I drove out to the overlook. AKL on these first-gen HR-Vs is more involved than a basic transponder job. The car's immobilizer module, which on the 2018 HR-V sits on the 38 board (steering lock integrated), has to be accessed and the old key data wiped before any new fob will register. I used my ACDP to pull a backup of the IMMO data first, then ran the AKL procedure through the OBD port. Once the system cleared, I programmed his new KR5V1X proximity fob, 72147-TZ3-A01, all four buttons plus proximity start.

Then the real test. Walk-up unlock on both front handles. Lock button on the handle. Remote lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Push-button start with the fob in a pocket, then on the dash, then in the center console. Everything talked.

He stood there watching his car start at a canyon overlook with no dealer within 30 miles. The whole job took about 40 minutes. He paid a fraction of what the dealer route plus tow would have run him.
