A photographer working a shoot near a canyon overlook outside Montecito had parked his 2018 HR-V and somewhere between setups the fob disappeared. Not at the car, not in his bag, just gone. He hiked back toward the main road until he got enough signal to make calls, and the first two people he reached told him smart key all-keys-lost was a dealer-only job. One of them suggested a tow. Getting it started again means accessing the immobilizer through the OBD port, clearing the old key data, and registering new fobs from scratch. I drove out to the overlook. He watched the whole thing from about three feet away, which I prefer. When his HR-V started on the first press of the button, he just stood there for a second like he expected the car to change its mind.
