The fix needs a dealer-level flash update, but I could verify if that was the actual problem. Hooked up my diagnostic tool, checked the RF Hub status. Sure enough, software version ending in AA. The bulletin calls for version AC or higher.
But here's what I could do right then: program him a second key that would at least give him backup while he scheduled the dealer flash. Used my AutoProPAD to clone his existing M3NWXFOB1 through the OBD port. The Security Gateway accepted it after the two-minute security delay. Now he had two keys with the same intermittent problem, but double the chances one would work on any given push.
He made the dealer appointment for the RF Hub flash. I made him a working spare for way less than they wanted for just the key blank.
