Got a call from a guy out near Rustic Canyon Golf Course in Moorpark. His 2010 LR4 had one working smart key left, and it was acting up. Passive entry worked maybe half the time. He had to press the fob right against the door handle to get a response, and some mornings the start button took two or three tries.
He figured it was the key dying. Already ordered a replacement KOBJTF10A shell online and swapped the board and blade into it. Same problems.
I pulled up and checked the original key first. CR2032 tested low, which explained the range issue, but the intermittent start was something else. Ran diagnostics through the OBD port on the CEM and found the second key slot still had an old fob registered that he said was lost two years ago. Three key IDs on file, one of them a ghost.
Cleared the lost key out, registered his current fob clean, dropped a fresh CR2032 in, and tested passive entry on all four doors plus the tailgate. Start button caught on the first press every time. The CEM was spending time polling for a key that would never answer, and it was adding enough delay to make the system feel broken.
He thought he needed a new key. He needed ten minutes of diagnostic work and a battery. That was it.
