I got a call from a Mountain Meadows address on a Sunday night, around 9:30. LR4, wouldn't acknowledge the fob at all. Owner had already tried the usual: fresh CR2032, standing right next to the door handle. Nothing.
When I pulled up, first thing I did was hold the fob physically against the start button. On these systems, if the fob's RF signal is weak or blocked, the car can still read it inductively at close range. The engine turned over. That told me the fob was alive and the vehicle was registered, but something was killing the RF side.
Turns out the fob housing had a hairline crack running right across the back where the battery contacts sit. Barely visible in daylight, invisible at night. The battery was making intermittent contact. The RF transmitter was getting just enough power to almost work, which is worse than not working at all because it rules out the obvious fix.
I swapped the fob body on site, moved his registered key into the new shell, seated a fresh CR2032 flat and clean, and tested every function: passive entry on both front handles, lock, unlock, all five buttons, and the start button from inside. Solid across the board.
He mentioned he'd already called the dealer that afternoon. They told him the next available appointment was nine days out, and they'd need to assess whether the fob or the antenna module was the issue before ordering anything. He was looking at taking an Uber to work all week.
He didn't need that. He needed someone to show up on a Sunday night with the right tools and actually look at the thing.
