I was out in the Peach Hill area of Moorpark on a Tuesday afternoon when a call came in about a 2012 Land Rover LR4. The owner had one key and it had stopped being recognized consistently. Sometimes the car would see it, sometimes it wouldn't. She'd already done what most people do first: fresh battery. It hadn't helped.
When I pulled up, she walked me through it. The fob would start the vehicle maybe half the time. The door handles weren't responding reliably. Then I walked every door, tested handle response on all four, ran the lock and unlock repeatedly from distance, and watched the dash for any key-not-detected warning on entry. It was reading clean and consistent.
That took care of about half the story. The other half was that her single working key was the only one registered to the vehicle, and if it had failed completely she'd have been in all-keys-lost territory, which on this system means diagnostic equipment, a full reset sequence, and a longer visit. I told her straight: get a spare made while we're standing here. She did. We added the second fob through the OBD port, verified both keys worked at every door, and she drove off with a backup for the first time since she bought the car.
