I was parked near Moorpark College when I got the call. Guy near the Moorpark College Area said his LR4 had been sitting in his driveway for two days. He had the fob in his hand, he was standing right next to the car, and the door handles weren't responding. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time he got in. He'd already swapped the battery himself.
When I got there, he handed me the fob and I could see right away the new CR2032 was in correctly. So this wasn't a battery seat issue. I ran the diagnostic and found that one of his two registered keys had dropped out of the system. Not corrupted, just gone. It happens on these. The vehicle had taken a software update through the dealer a few months back and something in that process had left the key count off. The fob he was holding had technically lost its pairing.
I re-registered both keys through the OBD port, verified the immobilizer recognized the correct number of keys, and then walked the car: all four door handles, the start button, lock and unlock from the fob at range, and the remaining buttons. Everything came back clean.
He asked if the dealer would have caught it faster. I told him honestly, they probably would have diagnosed it right, but then he'd be waiting on a scheduling window and potentially a parts order even if the fob itself didn't need replacing. He got it done in his own driveway before noon.
