2013 Land Rover LR4 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy at Moorpark Marketplace in Moorpark. His 2013 LR4 HSE had been sitting in the lot for about two hours while he ran errands, and when he came back, the dash lit up with "Smart Key Not Found" and the start button did nothing.
He had already swapped the CR2032 in the KOBJTF10A fob. Twice, actually, because he bought a two-pack from the store right there. No change.
I pulled up and checked the obvious stuff. Fob buttons worked fine from the outside, locks cycled, tailgate popped. But sitting in the driver seat and pressing start got nothing. That pattern points away from the key and toward the car.
Ran diagnostics through the OBD port and the CAS module was throwing communication faults on the LF ring antennas, the ones buried in the steering column and center console that detect the fob inside the cabin. Checked the main 12V battery and it was sitting at 11.4 volts. These LR4s are notorious for parasitic drain, and a weak battery starves the interior antenna circuit first while the exterior RF receiver still has enough juice to catch button presses.
Charged the battery, cleared the CAS faults, and everything came back. Start button, passive entry, all of it. He thought he needed a new key. He needed a battery tender.
Took about 40 minutes total, right there in the parking lot, for a fraction of what a dealer diagnostic visit would have run.
