A Mountain Meadows resident called on a Thursday morning. She had two fobs for her 2016 LR4 and neither one was being recognized by the vehicle. The dash was showing a key warning, the door handles weren't waking up on approach, and she was stuck in her driveway.
She'd already swapped the CR2032 in one of the fobs. Still nothing. So she assumed it was a programming issue and started calling around.
I was in Moorpark already, so I headed straight to her street. When I got there, I opened the second fob and checked the battery. It was a 2032, seated fine, looked recent. But the contact spring on the negative side had a slight forward lean -- not enough to lose contact entirely, just enough to be unreliable. Cleaned both terminals, reset the spring, reseated the battery.
Then I checked fob number one again. That one had a battery that read low on the meter even though it was new out of the package. Cheap cells do that. Swapped it for one I carry and retested.
Both fobs came back. Walk-up handle detection working on all four doors, start button reading the key through the cabin, every button confirmed.
She didn't need new fobs, didn't need a dealer visit, didn't need any programming work done at all. Just the right diagnostic read on what was actually failing. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a significant wait time plus the cost of at least one replacement fob. The whole thing was handled in her driveway in under thirty minutes.
