Got a call from a guy out at Rincon Beach Park in Ventura. His 2015 Range Rover Evoque was sitting in the lot with the tailgate up and a surfboard half out. He had one working smart key that morning. Now he had zero.
He pressed the start button and the dash just gave him "Smart Key Not Found." Tried holding the fob against the steering column. Nothing. The emergency blade got him into the door, but the engine was not going anywhere without the immobilizer seeing a valid key.
I pulled up, connected to the OBD port, and talked to the KVM. The module had the key's ID stored but was not receiving its 433 MHz signal at all. Opened up the KOBJTF10A fob and found the problem. The CR2032 had leaked just enough to leave a film of white residue across one of the battery contacts and the edge of the board. Cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2032, reassembled.
Then the part people skip: I re-synced the fob through the KVM, walked each door handle for passive entry, tested the tailgate release button, and ran two full start cycles. He stood there watching the dash like he expected another error message.
He loaded the board back in and drove off. The whole thing took about 25 minutes, right there in the parking lot, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him on the phone earlier that day.
