I was out in Poinsettia on a Tuesday when the call came in. Owner of a 2018 Evoque, said the fob had been acting up for a week and then just quit. Touch unlock on the driver door stopped working, the start button was flashing, and the dash was throwing a key-not-detected warning even with the fob sitting right on the center console.

When I got there, she had already bought a new CR2032. Fresh battery, same problem. That told me something.

I popped the fob open on the hood. The battery tray had a broken retaining tab, clean snap, like it had been opened before and forced back together. The battery was making just enough contact to register on a reader but losing it under any vibration. She had been driving over Ventura's surface streets and the fob was cutting in and out the whole time, confusing the keyless module into a fault state.

Fixed the tray, seated the battery correctly, then did a module reset at the fusebox to clear the stored fault. Walked every door for touch response, checked the start button, ran the fob functions. Everything came back clean.

She had already called the dealer before me. They quoted her a new fob, a programming session, and a diagnostic fee, all as separate line items. She said it added up to more than she paid for her last used car payment. She paid me a fraction of that, and the original fob is still in her pocket.
