2023 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2023 Evoque?

A smart key is not just a remote. It contains a transponder chip that actively communicates with your vehicle's security system using encrypted rolling codes. Every time you use it, the key and the car exchange a new code sequence. If that handshake doesn't happen correctly, the immobilizer stays active and the engine won't start, even if everything else looks fine. Your fob has five buttons and runs on a CR2032.

Q: How does the dealer's price compare to what a mobile locksmith charges?

Dealer quotes on current Land Rovers are consistently among the highest you'll see for any make. Evoque and Range Rover owners posting on forums have reported quotes from Land Rover dealers ranging from several hundred dollars for a straightforward duplicate to well over a thousand for all-keys-lost situations. Part of that is the technology, part of it is dealer labor rates, and part of it is tow fees if the car isn't drivable.

Q: I have one working key for my 2023 Evoque. Do I actually need a spare?

Yes, and the reason is specific to how JLR programs these systems. Adding a second key while you still have a working one is a straightforward procedure. All-keys-lost is a different job entirely. When there are no registered fobs, the security system has to go through a full reset sequence, which takes longer, requires more tool depth, and costs more.

Q: My Evoque shows a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is new. What's going on?

A few things can cause this even with a fresh cell. First check that the CR2032 is seated flat and making full contact on both sides of the housing. A slightly tilted battery will read as dead. Beyond that, current-generation JLR fobs can develop a communication fault where the pairing between the fob and the vehicle's security system needs to be re-established through a diagnostic tool. It's not the same as the battery being low.

2023 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out of Midtown Ventura on a Tuesday morning. The owner of a 2023 Range Rover Evoque had walked out to her car, hit the door handle, and nothing happened.

The dash showed a key-not-detected warning. The fob was the same one she'd been using since she bought the car. She'd already tried holding it closer to the door, restarting it with the fob pressed against the start button, all the forum advice. Nothing.

I pulled up and she handed me the fob. First thing I did was pop it open right on the hood. CR2032 was original, which told me enough. Swapped it out, reseated it clean, and handed it back to her.

That wasn't it.

So I connected to the OBD port and ran diagnostics. The fob itself was still registered to the vehicle, but it was throwing a communication fault. This is the thing about these current-generation JLR systems: a degraded battery can sometimes cause the fob's internal circuitry to hiccup in a way that doesn't fully clear just by swapping the cell. The module had logged the key as unreliable and needed a prompt to reestablish the pairing properly.

I ran the re-sync through the diagnostic tool, cleared the fault, and tested all five buttons plus the door handle passive entry. Everything came back.

She asked me what a dealer would have done. Honestly, they probably would have asked her to tow it in and quote her a new fob plus programming labor and told her to wait a few days. She was driving again in under an hour, in her own parking lot, for a fraction of that.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Land Rover key replacement so expensive?▼

It comes down to how the current JLR security architecture is built. On the 2023 Evoque, the smart key doesn't just talk to one module. It communicates with several interconnected control units that all have to agree the key is legitimate before the car does anything. Programming a new key into that system requires professional JLR-compatible diagnostic software, and on current-generation vehicles that process connects to JLR's cloud infrastructure to validate the procedure.
