I got a call out of Midtown Ventura on a Tuesday morning. The owner of a 2023 Range Rover Evoque had walked out to her car, hit the door handle, and nothing happened. The dash showed a key-not-detected warning. The fob was the same one she'd been using since she bought the car. So I connected to the OBD port and ran diagnostics. The fob itself was still registered to the vehicle, but it was throwing a communication fault. This is the thing about these current-generation JLR systems: a degraded battery can sometimes cause the fob's internal circuitry to hiccup in a way that doesn't fully clear just by swapping the cell. The module had logged the key as unreliable and needed a prompt to reestablish the pairing properly.
I ran the re-sync through the diagnostic tool, cleared the fault, and tested all five buttons plus the door handle passive entry. Everything came back.
She asked me what a dealer would have done. Honestly, they probably would have asked her to tow it in and quote her a new fob plus programming labor and told her to wait a few days. She was driving again in under an hour, in her own parking lot, for a fraction of that.
