Out in Mussel Shoals, I got a call from a woman who had been standing next to her 2022 Evoque for about twenty minutes before she reached me. The fob was in her hand. The car just wouldn't acknowledge it.
She'd already tried the usual things before calling. Fresh battery, she said. Tried locking and unlocking a few times. Nothing changed. The dash was showing a key warning every time she pressed the start button, and the door handles weren't responding to touch the way they normally do.
I pulled up and we started at the beginning anyway. I checked the fob physically, the battery contacts, the way the case was seated. The CR2032 she'd put in was fine. But when I tested with the fob held directly against the start button, the car started right up.
That told me the fob antenna output was marginal, not dead. The fob itself was reading as authenticated when you got it close enough to the button, but it wasn't broadcasting well enough for normal proximity range. The case had a hairline separation where someone had pried it open and the two halves weren't sitting flush anymore, which was creating just enough gap to affect the internal antenna geometry.
Replaced the fob on site. Programmed it through the OBD port with the one working key still present, which kept the job clean and fast. She was back in the car in under an hour, total.
The dealer had been her first call that morning. They told her she'd need to leave the vehicle and wait on a parts order. She didn't have that kind of time.
