Got a call from a guy in Five Points on a Tuesday morning. He'd been driving his 2011 MINI Clubman with a key that had been acting up for weeks - remote worked sometimes, sometimes didn't, and that morning it just stopped starting altogether. He'd already tried a new CR2032 at the gas station the night before. Didn't help.
I pulled up to his place with the car sitting in the driveway. He'd been waiting about twenty minutes since the call.
First thing I did was open the fob. The new battery he'd put in was a generic store brand, slightly thinner than spec, and it was rocking in the tray instead of sitting flush. The contact pressure was basically zero. Swapped it for a proper CR2032, seated it correctly, and the remote came back immediately. But the no-start was still there, which told me the transponder side needed attention.
Connected through the OBD port, pulled up the immobilizer data, and confirmed the key wasn't being recognized for start. Cut a new key blade on the machine to match his lock, programmed the transponder through the diagnostic software, synced the remote. Tested lock, unlock, and the third button. Tested the start twice. Walked around the car with him and showed him everything working.
The whole job was done before his coffee cooled down. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a multi-day turnaround and he'd have needed a tow just to get the car there. He lives three blocks from his job. A tow and three days wasn't going to work for him. He paid a fraction of what they wanted and drove to work an hour late instead of missing the whole week.
