I was out near Channel Islands Harbor on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. A woman had parked near the marina, and somewhere between the boat and the car, the fob stopped responding entirely. Doors wouldn't unlock on approach, the start button was giving her a key-not-detected warning, and the backup metal insert inside the fob was the only thing getting her into the car. She'd already tried a new CR2032 from a gas station. Still nothing.
I pulled up, and the first thing I did was check the replacement battery she'd put in. The gas station cell was seated correctly, but the contact tension in that fob cavity was soft -- happens when people pry the cover instead of using the right slot. Light bend in the positive contact was killing the circuit under load even though it looked fine sitting still. I reset the contact and retested. Still no pairing with the car.
That ruled out the easy fix. The fob itself had lost its registration -- common when the battery dies completely and sits dead long enough, or sometimes after a module reset the car had no memory of it. I connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port, cleared the old key data, and registered the replacement fob to the vehicle's security system. Cut the blade key to match the lock cylinder, ran the door handles, tested all four buttons, confirmed the car started and the warning cleared.
She was back on the water side of the lot in about 45 minutes. The dealer had quoted her a multi-day turnaround because they needed to order the fob. I had the part on the van.
