I was in El Rio on a Tuesday afternoon for what the owner described as "the key just stopped working overnight."
It was a 2012 MINI Clubman, parked in a driveway off Ventura Road. She had already done the obvious thing: bought a replacement CR2032 from the pharmacy and swapped it in herself. Lock and unlock came back for about a day, then went dark again. The car would still start, but the remote was dead and she was getting a warning on the cluster every time she sat down.
When I got there and pulled the key apart, the battery was fine. Good voltage. But the contact plate inside the fob had a slight oxidation ring on it, the kind that builds up when moisture gets in around the seam. The fob body on these can separate a little over time, enough to let humidity work on the internals without being obvious from the outside.
I cleaned the contacts, confirmed the battery was seating flush, and then went to the OBD port to check where things stood. The immobilizer had logged the key as present but the remote signal wasn't being recognized on any frequency test. The fob transmitter itself had gone. Not the battery. Not the transponder. The transmitter board.
So we cut a new key blade to her vehicle, programmed a replacement fob through the diagnostic port, and tested every button in both directions before I packed up. She had been quoted a wait time of several days at the dealer, plus the cost of parts and labor separately. We had her done before she finished her second cup of coffee.
