Got a call from a guy in the Fremont North neighborhood in Oxnard. His 2013 MINI Clubman, one key left, and he'd just watched his dog knock it off the kitchen counter into a full sink. Fished it out fast, but the remote quit and the car threw a steering lock fault on the dash when he tried to start it.
He dried it with a hair dryer for twenty minutes. Still nothing.
When I got there, I popped the remote head key open on his tailgate. The CR2032 looked fine, but there was water sitting on the board around the PCF7945 chip. Cleaned the board with contact cleaner, let it air out, new CR2032 seated correctly. Remote came back. But the car still showed the steering lock warning and would not crank.
That part was the CAS3 module being fussy. Water-damaged keys can send a corrupted signal that makes the CAS lock up. I ran diagnostics through the OBD port, cleared the CAS fault, and re-synced the key. The EWS handshake went through clean.
Then the full walkthrough. Engine start, engine stop, lock, unlock, trunk button from ten feet, twenty feet, thirty feet. He stood there holding his dog under one arm, watching me pace his driveway with the fob like I was surveying the lot.
The key survived. He just needed someone with the right tools to sort out the aftermath, on site, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted him over the phone.
