I got a call from someone parked off Meta Street in Downtown Oxnard. 2013 MINI Clubman, single key, and the remote had been acting up for a few weeks before it quit entirely. Car would still start, but only if she held the fob right against the steering column. Doors had to be locked manually. She'd been living with it.
When I got there, she had a CR2032 in her hand, brand new, already tried. Battery wasn't the issue.
I pulled the fob apart and looked at the contacts. One tab was flattened almost flush, just from years of being pressed against keys and coins in a bag. That gets you weak or no signal even when the cell is reading full voltage. I reset the contact, reseated the battery, and tested range. It came back strong.
But she'd also mentioned the car had thrown some warning lights a couple months back after a big rainstorm. I checked the sunroof drains while I was there. The front ones were partially blocked. On these R-series cars that's not a small thing. Water that shouldn't be inside gets inside, and the electronics in the footwell area take the hit. I cleared them out and flagged it for her.
The key worked, the range was back, and she left knowing what had actually been going on with her car. That's the job.
