2017 MINI Clubman Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from someone in the La Colonia neighborhood in Oxnard. His 2017 Clubman had one working smart key left, and the lock/unlock range had shrunk to basically touching the door handle with the fob. He'd already been to the MINI dealer and they quoted him a wait of over a week just to get the replacement fob ordered and programmed through ISTA.

I pulled up to his place and he had the car parked on the street with the split barn doors wide open, airing it out. He said he'd been leaving them open because he was worried if he closed everything he wouldn't be able to get back in. That kind of low-grade panic where you start changing your whole routine around a key that's half-working.

I tested his existing fob first. The CR2032 was at 2.7 volts, which is borderline. New battery brought the range back, so that was one problem solved. Then I got into the FEM/BDC module through the OBD port, registered the new NBGIDGNG1 fob, and programmed all four buttons: lock, unlock, trunk, and panic. Cut the HU92 emergency blade on site so he'd have a backup if the fob ever went completely dead.

Whole thing took about 40 minutes. He closed the barn doors, tested them twice from across the street, and finally stopped hovering.

He kept the dealer appointment on the books for a day or two, then canceled it.
