Got a call from a guy down in the Pierpont neighborhood in Ventura. His 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue was parked near the beach and his only key had snapped off in the ignition. The blade broke right at the head, clean snap, with the bottom half still jammed in the cylinder.

I pulled the broken piece out of the cylinder without damage, which is the part that matters. Once you chew up a PassLock ignition cylinder trying to extract a broken key, you're buying a whole new lock assembly, and that turns a simple job into a much bigger one. Took patience and the right extraction tools, but it slid out clean.
Cut a fresh B102 key to code right there on the spot. Turned the ignition, security light came on and held for about ten minutes while the PassLock relearn cycled through. That's normal. The system has to see the new key's resistance match from the Hall-effect sensor in the cylinder before it releases the fuel injectors. Once the light went off, the 3800 Series II fired right up.
He sat on the hood watching the whole thing. When the engine caught, he just nodded. No tow, no dealer wait, no days without his car. Done in the parking area, for a fraction of what they quoted him.
