Got a call from someone near Ebell Park in Santa Paula about a 2001 Intrigue. Both remotes had quit on her. Doors wouldn't respond, trunk button dead, nothing. She had been locking the car manually with the key blade for two weeks and finally got tired of it.
When I pulled up, she handed me the two remotes and they both looked rough. One had a crack running through the case. The other one's battery contacts were green with corrosion. CR2032 cells in both were completely flat.
I cleaned the boards on both units, replaced the CR2032s, and resealed the cracked housing. Then I reprogrammed both remotes through the door lock cylinder relearn procedure, which on these GMs is a specific turn sequence in the driver door, not an OBD thing. Held lock and unlock together, cycled the key, and the locks cycled back to confirm each fob registered.
Tested every button on both remotes. Lock, unlock, trunk pop, panic. Walked about forty feet out and tested range. Both responded clean.
She picked up the one with the crack and looked at it like she expected it to quit again. I told her the case was the weak point now and a new shell swap would keep it going longer. But for the moment, both remotes were working and she had her car back to normal.
Whole thing took less time than the dealer would have spent just writing up the service ticket.
