1997 Pontiac Firebird
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I need a replacement key for my 1997 Pontiac Firebird. How do you figure out the right cut?

Two ways. If you still have a working key, I duplicate it directly. If you have no key at all, I decode the cut from one of the lock cylinders on the car, either the door or the ignition, using a decoder tool. From that I can cut a working replacement blade on site. No original key required, no tow to the dealer, no waiting on a parts order.

Q: How fast can you get out to the Hillsides in Ventura?

Average arrival is 15 to 25 minutes. I dispatch from the closest point available when you call. No appointment window, no scheduling days out. Call now, I head out now.

Q: My 1997 Firebird key turns but the ignition feels rough and sometimes does not want to turn back to off. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Probably the ignition cylinder itself. The fourth-gen F-body ignition cylinders are known for wearing out, especially on cars that are getting up in age. A worn cylinder can make even a correctly cut key feel gritty, catch on the way back to off, or occasionally stick in the accessory position. If a fresh key cut does not clean up the feel, the cylinder is the next thing to look at.

Q: Can a locksmith cut a key for a 1997 Firebird without the original, or do I need to go to a dealer?

A locksmith can handle it. The dealer is not required for a mechanical key on this vehicle. I decode the cut from the lock cylinder on site and produce a working key from that. The dealer would need to look up the key code by VIN anyway, and on a car this age that record may or may not still be in their system.

1997 Pontiac Firebird Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone up in the Hillsides in Ventura, parked on one of those narrow streets with a decent view and zero shade. He had locked his only key inside the 1997 Firebird. Classic.

I came out, got him into the car, and then he asked if I could cut him a spare while I was already there. That is the part people forget to do until it happens again.

I pulled the key code from the door lock cylinder right on the spot and cut a replacement blade to the vehicle. Took maybe ten minutes total once I was set up. No appointment, no tow to the dealer, no waiting around for a parts order.

He mentioned he had called the dealer first out of habit. They told him they could get him in later in the week. He needed his car that afternoon.

That is pretty much the whole story. Metal key, cut on site, done before the neighborhood got any hotter.

“The gentleman was amazing. He programmed and cut two keys with the fob in about 10 min. The dealership wouldn't help us and he came in clutch. Would definitely recommend.”

Pontiac Firebird Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1997 Pontiac Firebird key fob need a battery replaced?▼

There is no fob on this one. The 1997 Firebird uses a plain metal key, nothing more. No remote, no battery, no buttons. If you were quoted a fob battery replacement for this car somewhere, that does not apply here. What you need is simply a key cut to your vehicle, and that is the whole job.
