2000 Pontiac Firebird
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: I lost my only key to my 2000 Pontiac Firebird. Can you still make one without the original?

Yes, that is a standard job. When there is no original to copy from, I decode the lock directly, either at the ignition cylinder or the door lock, and cut a new key to match. No original required, no towing to a dealer, done at your location. The Firebird's lock cylinders on these are well-documented and the key blanks are readily available, so all-keys-lost on this car is not a complicated call.

Q: How quickly can you reach the Premium Outlets Area in Camarillo?

Average arrival time in that area runs about 15 to 25 minutes from when you call. I dispatch to the closest available tech immediately. No appointment window, no scheduling days out. Call now and someone is moving toward you now.

Q: My 2000 Firebird key goes in fine but the ignition is hard to turn or feels sticky. Do I need a new key or a new cylinder?

This is one of the more common complaints on late-fourth-generation Firebirds. After this many years, the ignition wafers wear or a wafer can actually crack and shift position inside the cylinder, creating a false bind. A correctly cut key by itself will not fix a mechanically failing cylinder. Here is how I sort it out on site: if the key I cut from a decoded reading turns smoothly, the old key was just worn and the cylinder is still good.

Q: Can I just copy my worn 2000 Firebird key at a hardware store?

You can, but it is a gamble. A hardware store copies what it sees, and if the original is worn, the copy is worn the same way. Works fine for a while, then gets progressively worse until it stops turning altogether. Decoding the lock and cutting to spec is the right way to do it.

2000 Pontiac Firebird Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Near the Premium Outlets Area in Camarillo, a guy flagged me down after spending twenty minutes fighting his Firebird in a parking lot. The key would go in, then just sit there. Would not turn. He thought he needed a new key cut.

I pulled out my decoder and read the lock directly. The original key he handed me was so worn down the shoulders were nearly flat. Copying from that blank would have given him a key that might work once and then not again. So I cut fresh from the decoded lock, not from the worn original.

The new key slid in and turned clean. He had been fighting that ignition for months, not just that afternoon.

He mentioned the dealer told him to bring it in and leave it. I was done while he was still standing next to the car.

Pontiac Firebird Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2000 Pontiac Firebird key have a fob or remote?▼

No. The 2000 Firebird uses a plain metal key, nothing else. No fob, no battery, no remote functions. Replacement is a cut-to-vehicle job, done on site. That also means no programming fees, no diagnostic hookup, no wait for dealer equipment. Just the key, cut right, and you are back on the road.
