Got a call from someone over near Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. Shift worker, parked in the lot, reached into a jacket pocket and came up empty. The key had slipped out somewhere between the building and the car, and an hour of retracing steps turned up nothing.
She had already called the dealer. They told her to tow it in and that it would be a couple days because they needed to look up the VATS code and order the blank. She didn't have a couple days. She had another shift the next morning and no ride home.
I pulled up, measured the VATS resistance right at the ignition harness using a multimeter on the orange and white wires coming off the lock cylinder connector. Came back as pellet number 6. Cut the key on the HPC Blitz, matched the sidebar, and dropped in the correct resistance pellet.
Then the part that always takes longer than people expect: testing. Turn it to RUN, wait for the security light to cycle, then crank. If the resistance is even slightly off, the Body Control Module throws a fit and you sit through a four-minute lockout. It took on the first turn.
She sat in the driver seat, started it twice more just to be sure, and then just kind of exhaled. Whole thing took about 25 minutes, right there in the hospital lot. No tow truck, no two-day wait, no lost shifts.
