1998 Pontiac Firebird
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the job actually take once you get to my car?

For a metal key on a 1998 Firebird, once I'm at the vehicle I'm decoding the lock or working from the key code, cutting the blade, and testing it. That whole process typically runs 20 to 30 minutes. No programming countdown, no waiting on a tool to cycle through a sequence. You're holding a working key well under an hour from the time I pull up.

Q: Can you make a key faster than the dealer?

Not even close. A dealer on a car this age may need to look up the key code through a service database, possibly source a blank if they don't stock it, and fit it into a tech's schedule. That process can stretch to days. I show up with blanks and cutting equipment on the truck. One visit, same day, usually same hour. There's no appointment, no tow required, and no waiting room.

Q: My key turns but the ignition feels stiff and grindy. Do I just need a new key cut?

Maybe, but probably not only that. On a car that's been around since 1998, the ignition cylinder itself wears over time, especially if the key ring is heavy or the car has lived most of its life with a worn key. A stiff, grindy feel usually means the wafers inside the cylinder are worn or a wafer has started to fail. A fresh key cut to the current cylinder tolerances can help, and sometimes it's all you need.

Q: I only have one key and I'm worried about losing it. Can you make a spare?

Yes, and on a car this age, making a spare before you lose the original is a genuinely good idea. Once the original is gone, the job shifts to decoding a lock cylinder or pulling the key code through other means, which takes more time. If you hand me the working key, I can cut a duplicate on the spot. Two keys, one visit, done.

1998 Pontiac Firebird Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy over in Juanamaria on a Saturday night around 9. He had a 1998 Firebird, his only key snapped off in the door cylinder, and he had the broken shank sitting in his palm when he called. Dealer was obviously closed. He had already tried two locksmiths who didn't pick up.

The break was clean, right at the shoulder, which was lucky. I was able to pull the broken piece out of the cylinder without damaging anything. The cylinder itself was worn but still serviceable.

I decoded the lock right there on the street, cut a replacement key blade to match, and tested it in both the door and the ignition before I packed up. The whole job was done before 10:30. He had one comment: the new key actually turned smoother than his original had in years, because the original was probably a worn copy of a worn copy.

He mentioned the dealer quote he had looked up online earlier, just out of curiosity. Saved a good chunk going the mobile route, and he didn't have to wait until Monday and arrange a tow.

Pontiac Firebird Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key after hours or on a weekend?▼

Call us. We work until 11:30 PM seven days a week, including weekends and holidays. The dealer closes in the afternoon and won't touch a key job until they have an open appointment slot, which on a Friday night means Monday at the earliest. For a 1998 Firebird with a metal key, there's no part to order and no ship time to wait on. We carry key blanks, we decode on site, and we cut on the spot.
