Got a call from a guy near Camarillo Grove Park who had been fighting his 2001 Firebird for two days. He turned the key, the engine cranked fine, but it would not fire. SECURITY light glowing steady on the dash. He had already replaced the fuel pump relay because a forum told him to.
When I got there, the car was sitting in his driveway with the hood still up from his last attempt. I pulled the key out and looked at the blade under a light. The little resistor pellet was still physically there, but it was dark and pitted. Years of pocket lint and moisture had corroded the contact surface just enough that the PassKey II reading was drifting outside its tolerance window.
I checked the resistance with a meter. Should have been one of the 15 set values. His was floating between two of them, which is exactly what makes the TDM say no. Cut a fresh blank with the correct matched pellet, clean cut on the Silca machine right out of the van.
Turned the key, SECURITY light flickered and went off, engine caught on the first try. He just stood there looking at the old key like it had personally betrayed him.
The whole thing took about 25 minutes. He told me the dealer quoted him over a week because they wanted to inspect the entire ignition assembly first. He just needed the right key.
