Got a call from a guy at one of the office parks off Gonzales Road in Oxnard. His 2007 Tribeca had one key left and it was getting rough around the grip. He said the plastic was cracking and he could feel the transponder chip shifting inside the bow. Smart move calling before it actually broke.
I pulled up, confirmed his VIN off the dash, and matched it to the SUB-120 blank with the 4D-62 chip. Cut the key on my mobile station using the original as a reference, then plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the steering column.
The Tribeca's ICU stores the transponder codes. The tool reads the existing key data, registers the new 4D-62 chip, and writes it into the system. Took maybe 20 minutes total, including testing the new key through three full start cycles to make sure the immobilizer accepted it clean every time.
He turned both keys over in his hand, comparing them. Then he asked how long the dealer would have taken. I told him most Subaru dealers quote a few days if they have the blank in stock, longer if they have to order it. And they need the car in their bay the whole time.
He just nodded, put the old key in his glovebox as a backup, and went back inside to finish his day. Simple job, done at his car, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
