Out in Ormond Beach, close to the industrial stretch where a lot of the warehouse and trade workers park, I got a call from a guy who said his 2009 Subaru Tribeca "wasn't reading his key." That description covers a lot of ground, so I asked him a few questions before I loaded up.
He said the car started fine, buttons worked fine, but that morning it just sat there. No crank, nothing. He'd already swapped the CR2032 because he read that online. Smart move, wrong problem.
When I got there, I had him try the key while I watched. The dash was showing a key warning light and the engine wouldn't turn over. The blade was turning in the cylinder freely, but the immobilizer wasn't seeing the transponder. I checked the fob housing and found it: a crack running right through the grip where the key ring attaches. The PCB inside had shifted just enough that the transponder coil wasn't sitting where it needed to be relative to the ignition cylinder antenna.
The battery swap hadn't changed anything because the battery was never the issue. The housing was.
We went with a new remote head key, cut to his vehicle on site, and programmed it to the immobilizer right there in the lot. The whole job was under an hour. He told me the dealer was going to have him wait for a part order and schedule two separate appointments. He was back at work that afternoon.
The old fob is sitting in my parts bin now. The battery in it is still good.
