I was parked off Las Positas Road in Santa Barbara when the call came in. Guy said his 2026 Toyota Crown fob had been getting flaky for about two weeks. Range dropped first, then the driver-side door handle stopped responding to touch, then one morning the car just sat there showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash even with the fob sitting right on the center console.
He'd already swapped the battery himself. CR2450, correct size, name brand. Good instinct, wrong result. Fob still acting up.
When I got there I opened the fob on the hood. Battery was seated fine. The contact plate on the positive side had a faint film on it, not corrosion exactly, just oxidation from a previous dead cell that had sat in there too long. Cleaned the contacts, reseated the new CR2450, and that alone brought the range back. But the driver-side handle touch unlock was still inconsistent.
That part matters because it's a separate conversation from the fob itself. If the fob is transmitting and the start button sees it, but one door handle doesn't respond, the handle sensor is the suspect, not the key. I walked every door, tested the lock and unlock buttons, ran the panic, held the fob at different distances, and confirmed the key was doing its job. The handle issue was his to take up with the dealer under the factory coverage on a new vehicle.
He did not need a new key programmed that day. Sometimes the job is diagnosing what the problem is not, which saves the guy money and saves me from doing unnecessary work. He already knew about me from YouTube before he called, which meant he understood what he was actually getting when I showed up.
