I was working out of South Winds in Oxnard on a Tuesday afternoon when a call came in about a 2013 XC60. The owner had been getting a key-not-detected warning on and off for about a week and finally that morning the car just sat there, refusing to authorize a start. She'd tried a new battery the night before and assumed that was the end of it.
I pulled up to find the car in a parking structure off the main road. She handed me the fob before I even had my kit open, already a little defeated about the whole thing.
I opened the fob housing right on the hood of my van. The CR2450 she had installed was the right type but the positive contact was ever so slightly lifted. On these slot-style Volvo fobs the contact geometry matters more than people expect because the car reads the fob through the slot, not through open air. A slightly sprung contact means inconsistent communication, which is exactly what produces the on-again off-again warning before it fails completely.
Seated the battery correctly, cleaned both contacts, closed the housing.
She slid the fob into the console slot and the car woke right up like nothing had happened.
That took about six minutes. She had been two days away from calling the dealer and asking them to order a new fob, which would have meant scheduling, waiting for parts, and finding a way to get the car there without a working key.
The dealer route is sometimes the right call. This one was not.
