Out near the Newbury Park Bike Path in Thousand Oaks, a guy had just landed back from a week-long work trip. His 2020 Volvo XC60 was sitting in the airport economy garage exactly where he left it. He pressed the fob. Nothing. Pressed it again, held it, tried every button. Doors stayed locked.

Got the door open with the emergency blade hidden inside the fob housing, then connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port and pulled up the CEM (Central Electronic Module, part of Volvo's SPA platform architecture). The key was still registered, but the prolonged dead battery had triggered a communication fault in the CEM that the backup start procedure alone wouldn't clear. I swapped in a fresh CR2032 and ran a fault code reset through the diagnostic port. Everything came back: passive entry on all four doors, tailgate button, push-to-start.
I handed him a spare CR2032 for the glovebox. He drove home that evening. His Volvo never left the parking space he pulled into a week earlier. The whole thing took less than an hour, for a fraction of what the dealer route plus a tow would have run him.
