In the Wilson neighborhood in Oxnard, a guy texted me a GPS pin with a one-line message: "Lost my only Volvo key. Car won't open."

He was near a coastal overlook, had already searched the area twice, and was past the point of optimism about finding it. No spare at home. Once that was done, I decoded the door and cut a replacement blade, then built out a new fob and ran the online authorization session to enroll it into the vehicle security system. The old factory fob ID got cleared out in the same process so it can't be used to start the car if someone finds it.

He watched most of it from a few feet away. When the engine turned over the first time, he said he'd expected this to be a two-day problem.

It was about two hours from his text to him driving away. The dealer quote he'd gotten over the phone would have cost him a tow and a multi-day wait on top of their service rate. He saved a good chunk, and his afternoon wasn't ruined.
