Got a call from someone parked near the Village area in Downtown La Mesa. She had a 1999 BMW 5 Series and her remote head key had stopped working reliably. Sometimes the car started, sometimes it sat there and did nothing. She thought the ignition was going. It wasn't.

When I got there I started where I always start on these: the fob battery. CR2032, and the one inside was reading low enough to cause intermittent dropout. Swapped it. That fixed the remote functions immediately. But the intermittent no-start was still a separate thread to pull on.

The 1999 5 Series runs an EWS immobilizer, an older rolling-code system built into the ignition management. On these cars, the transponder in the key head has to handshake with the EWS module on every start. When that dialogue gets interrupted by low voltage, a prior battery event, or just age-related signal degradation, the car can crank and not fire, or just refuse to crank at all. I connected to the OBD port, pulled the fault memory, and found a stored immobilizer communication fault sitting in there quietly. Reset it, confirmed the key's transponder was still in sync with the module, and ran three consecutive cold starts.

Then I walked the lot. Lock, unlock, trunk release, checked the remote range, and did it again from the far side of the parking area. Every function verified before I packed up.

She had already gotten a quote from a dealer up the road. The number they gave her was well into territory that made her pause. What she paid me was a fraction of that, and she left with a key that had been tested the right way, not just handed over.
