Your 2020 BMW 5 Series uses a Smart Key with 4 buttons on the face, a CR2032 battery inside for the remote signal, and a laser-cut blade that either folds out or slides from the bottom. Inside is a transponder chip that the car's CAS module checks every time you insert the key or press start.

A customer at her home near Rsf Village had a 5 Series with a cracked key shell. The rubber buttons were worn through, the chrome ring had flaked, and the blade was wobbly in the housing. She went to the dealer and they quoted $614 for a complete replacement. What they didn't mention is that the electronics inside were still working perfectly. She just needed a new shell.

I met her at her garage and brought replacement shells and my HU58 Lishi for verifying her older blade cut. Her fob, FCC ID N5F‑ID21A, had the classic CAS3 wear pattern I see on hundreds of BMW keys. I transferred the working electronics into a fresh shell, replaced the buttons, and cut a new blade. I showed her the circuit board so she could see everything inside was fine.

Total was $337. The dealer wanted $614 for a whole new fob when she only needed a shell swap. The electronics inside a BMW key can outlast two or three housings if the battery stays fresh.

Why is BMW key replacement so expensive?▼

BMW keys use 128-bit encryption written to multiple modules including the CAS, FEM, or BDC and the DME. Each key is VIN-specific and must be synchronized with your vehicle security system before the engine will start. Newer BMWs with FEM or BDC modules require even more complex procedures including ISN extraction from the engine computer. That is why BMW dealers can quote 500 to 800 for a single key. The security technology is real, but the dealer markup on top of it does not have to be.
