2000 BMW 5 Series Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in the Viejas Area off Alpine Boulevard, a woman called me about a spare key for her 2000 BMW 5 Series. She had one working key and had already been burned once by someone who showed up without a real setup and couldn't finish the job.
She mentioned she had looked up my BSIS license before dialing. That detail stuck with me. She wasn't being difficult, she was being careful, which is exactly the right move when you're dealing with a vehicle security system on a BMW.
I pulled up in the van, verified the factory fob she had against what the car expected, and got to work. The E39's immobilizer communicates with the transponder chip inside the key, and any new key has to be enrolled so the car recognizes it. That process runs through the OBD port with the right diagnostic equipment. It is not a button sequence you find on a forum. The key blade also has to be cut to match the ignition and door locks, and on an E39 that means reading the cut from an existing key or decoding the lock.
The whole job ran about an hour, parked in the lot. She had a working spare before she got back to whatever she was doing. She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a number that made her pause before she even asked about timing. I told her what I charged. She said she wished she had called me first, before the other guy.
That last part I hear a lot. License is public record. Van has the name on it. Tools are the right ones for the job.
