Worst case on a 2005 BMW 5 Series is an all-keys-lost where another locksmith already attempted the job and left the FEM or BDC module in a corrupted state. A bad EEPROM write or power interruption mid-procedure can lock the module so it rejects all programming attempts. Some locksmiths see that error and tell you to tow it to the dealer. Others tell you the module is dead.
A customer's BMW was at a Euro auto shop in San Ysidro. The shop had called another locksmith for a key on his 5 Series, and that locksmith attempted an FEM unlock, got an error, and left. The module was in a fault state and the car was completely dead. The shop called me.
I brought my ACDP bench tool. I recovered the backup, patched the corruption, wrote it back, and generated a fresh key from the restored data. His smart key, FCC ID LX8FZV, was a 3-button fob. The module came back online and the car accepted the new key on the first attempt. I showed the shop team what went wrong so they'd know what to look for if it ever came up again.
Total was about two hours, which is longer than normal. His bill was $185. The alternative was a flatbed to BMW, a potential module replacement at $395 or more, and a week without his car. I carry bench tools specifically for BMW module recovery jobs.
