My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out and make a new one on site?

Yes. The 2005 BMW 5 Series uses a physical ignition barrel, so a broken blade stays in the cylinder. We extract the broken piece from the ignition, decode the cut from the lock itself, and cut a replacement key blade on site. No tow required, no ordering parts in advance. Once the new key is cut, it still needs to be programmed and the immobilizer sync verified before the car will run, so we handle all of that in the same visit. You leave with a working key, not a promise to come back later.

What exactly is a remote head key, and why does my 2005 BMW 5 Series need one specifically?

A remote head key is a single unit where the key blade and the remote fob are built together, no separate fob hanging on the ring. Your 2005 BMW 5 Series uses this format with 3 buttons integrated into the head of the key.

What makes it BMW-specific is what's inside. The key carries a transponder chip that has to be registered to your vehicle's ignition control module, and that module in turn has to sync with the engine computer using a shared value before the car will start. The remote side handles your lock and unlock functions. Both layers have to work.

If someone cuts the blade correctly but skips or rushes the programming and sync side, you get a key that turns in the lock but the engine won't hold. That's not a bad key. It's an incomplete job. We program and verify the full sequence on site.

Question 3

My BMW is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

Start with the battery in the fob. The remote head key on the 2005 5 Series uses a CR2032, and when it gets low, the warning can appear before the remote functions start acting up. Swap it and test.

If the warning stays after a fresh battery, try holding the key close to the ignition barrel rather than relying on range. There's a backup antenna loop in the column area designed for exactly this situation.

If neither of those clears it, the key likely needs to be re-synced or re-registered to the vehicle. On the E60, a mismatch between the key and the ignition control module will produce this symptom and it won't resolve on its own. That's a diagnostic and programming job, not a battery swap.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

You need a tech. The 2005 BMW 5 Series does not have a user-accessible key programming sequence. There's no ignition-turn pattern, no button combination that registers a new key. The transponder has to be enrolled through the diagnostic port, and the sync between the ignition control module and the engine computer has to be completed with proper software. The fob you bought online is just a blank until that process runs. Buying the hardware first is fine, bring it along and we'll program it on site.

The engine starts fine but my remote lock and unlock buttons stopped working. Is the key going bad?

Not necessarily. On these E60s the transponder side and the remote RF side are independent functions in the same key. If the car starts without any issue, the immobilizer portion of the key is healthy. Dead or intermittent remote buttons on a key that still starts the car usually points to one of three things: a weak battery affecting only the RF transmitter range before it hits the transponder threshold, a worn or cracked button contact inside the fob, or in some cases a receiver issue on the vehicle side.

First move is a fresh CR2032 and a test from close range, within a foot or two of the door. If it works at close range but not from across a parking lot, the battery or the transmitter is marginal. If it does nothing at any range but the car still starts, the fob may need to be opened and inspected, or a new remote head key programmed.
