A resident near The Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe called me on a weekday morning. His 2008 BMW 5 Series key had snapped in the ignition. Half the blade was buried in the cylinder, half was in his hand.
A locksmith he had called the day before told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced. On a BMW, that kind of repair gets expensive fast, and then you still need a new key on top of it. He wasn't convinced that was the only option, so he looked for a second opinion and found me.
I drove out to The Crosby and took a look at the cylinder before touching anything. The fragment was seated deep but it wasn't jammed into the wafer stack. I used a dedicated extraction tool to work the broken piece out without contacting the wafer surfaces. Clean extraction, nothing scratched, nothing bent.
Once it was out I decoded the lock directly from the wafer readings. That told me exactly what cut the new key needed. I cut a fresh blade on site, checked the profile against the cylinder before I ever turned it, and then seated the transponder head properly so the vehicle's immobilizer would read it correctly.
The key turned on the first try. The original lock was untouched. No drilling, no cylinder swap, no trip to a dealer or a shop.
He mentioned what the other locksmith was planning to charge just to replace the cylinder, before any key work. What I charged him was a fraction of that. He drove off the same morning he called.
