Out near the Brown Field Area in Otay Mesa, I got a call from a guy who'd been dealing with an intermittent key issue for a couple of weeks on his 2018 BMW 5 Series. The fob would work fine in the morning, then by afternoon the car wouldn't detect it at all. He'd wave it near the door handle, nothing. Get in, put it in the center console area, still get a key-not-detected warning on the cluster. Then twenty minutes later it was fine again.
He figured it was the battery. Already swapped it himself. Same behavior.
When I got there, I asked him to show me exactly what it did. He walked up to the driver door and the car woke up, mirrors came out, door unlocked. We sat inside, tried to start it, and the dash threw the key warning. Then it cleared on its own.
That pattern matters. Completely dead fobs don't come and go. Intermittent detection on a G30 like this usually points to one of two things: the battery contact inside the fob has a micro-flex issue and loses connection under vibration, or the fob's internal board has developed a fault from being dropped. He confirmed it had been dropped a few months back, landed face-down on concrete.
I opened the fob on the hood of my service van. The CR2032 was seated, but one of the contact arms had a hairline bend from the impact. The battery was making contact most of the time, not all of the time. I corrected the contact, reseated the battery, and we ran through the full check: every button, comfort access on both doors, ignition detect from the console and from the door pocket.
Held solid through eight consecutive tests.
He didn't need a new fob. He needed someone who'd seen that failure pattern before and knew where to look first. Saved him a trip to the dealer and whatever they would have charged to sell him hardware he didn't need.
